5 Fun Facts About Being a Lifestyle Blogger

Being a lifestyle blogger tropical cover up

I was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend the other day to write this post about being a lifestyle blogger. I think people look at all the photos on social media and imagine this glamorous blogger life, but there’s more to it than all that. It’s been four months since I started this journey so I don’t quite consider myself a blogger yet, but a gal with a blog ha! I’ll take on that title when I can blog consistently every week, but all the below still apply!

By now you’ve probably figured out I love lists, so today I’m sharing 5 fun things about being a lifestyle blogger.

1| It’s a lot more work than you think

One of the biggest misconception people have is that being a lifestyle blogger is all about cute photos and getting brands throwing products at you. Not so my friends; we ain’t all out here getting rich y’all. Behind every Instagram or blog post you see were a few sweaty photoshoots, changing in cars, hundreds of shots to go through, plan and edit, and sometimes not even getting any shots to capture the essence of the story you’re trying to tell.

Then there’s the creative element. That perfect idea that came to you in the shower but then started to fall apart the moment you put your pen to paper. As I write this, I have no less than 30 draft posts that haven’t made it to light yet lol. And so much more! There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to bring all of this to life.

2| You struggle between living in the moment & getting the perfect shot

This one’s been really tough for me because prior to this, I was terribly inactive on social media. These days I’ve become that person who makes everyone at the table wait until I have my perfect shot. Yes I know, shame on me haha! There are times though when I have to stop myself and just enjoy being in the moment. When I start thinking things like “ooo I should order that food because it would photograph beautifully vs. because I’ll enjoy it” or “I should buy that outfit for a photoshoot even though I would never wear it in real life”, then I have to catch myself and reel it in. Not that I’ve ever thought any of that before *cough cough*.

3| Your eyes are always scouting for the perfect photoshoot location

Yep! These days when I’m driving, I’m always on the lookout for the perfect backdrop for a shot. I’m naturally pretty observant, but these days I notice EVERYTHING. Where you see a dump, I see a colorful location for a grungy photo. You see a desolate, rundown bench? I see a stable prop for my camera. An abandoned lot? A perfect spot for an uninterrupted photo session.

4| You constantly wonder if it’s worth it

Talk to any lifestyle blogger and I’m sure they can tell you how many times they’ve considered quitting; some eventually do. Yes there is money to be made in blogging, but if that’s the primary reason you’re doing it, you might as well quit now. It’s easy to look at all the successful bloggers out there and wonder if you’ll ever get there, forgetting that most of them have been doing this for many many years! If you’re not passionate about the core reasons why you started, then it’ll be very hard for you to keep going.  I definitely go through waves of “this is the best thing ever” and “why TF did I think this was a good idea…”.

5| And then you remember why you started

I do it because I love it and I’ve been exposed to so much and learnt a ton in these past few months. I always wanted my own platform where I could share quality content and it warms my heart when someone tells me one of my posts inspired them. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people and brands I would never have met otherwise. I’ve also been humbled by how little I know and how much I still have to learn.

This has definitely been my experience thus far too. My biggest struggle is not constantly checking my phone all the time. I totally relate to the sweaty photo shoots and just did one yesterday! lol

I so agree on number 2 (well I agree with everyone, but this one hit me the most). It’s so difficult to enjoy the moment, but I’ll try to get better at it. Being so active on social media is surprisingly hard too!

I ask myself on a daily basis if it’s worth it. I tell myself if I’m doing it for the money, then I’ll never be successful because who knows if/when/how much money I’ll make. If I’m doing it because I believe I have something meaningful to say and because I think other people will benefit from it, then I have a chance at success.

#2 so much, lol! I’m more of a beauty blogger than lifestyle so for me it’s having to wait to use a product because I need to take pictures first, lol! People don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, and there is so much they don’t see!

I thought of myself as lifestyle bigger. However, unlike you I do not take my own shots nor do I post pictures of myself. I blog about poetry I have written. What niche would you say I fit into. You also look great in those shots. That must take a lot of hard work to pull off.

Hey Ingrid! Hmmm I think you’re somewhere in between lifestyle and poetry maybe? Who cares about niches anyway lol. Thanks so much! It does take a lot of work but I enjoy it and I’m learning everyday! xx

Literally, all of this resonates with me. I’m constantly looking at everything in case it’s “instagram worthy” and I miss a lot of the experience you get my “being present” because of it. It’s a shame but it’s how you end up wired!
